Parag Agrawal takes over as Twitter CEO
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey announced on Monday he's stepped down as the social media platform's CEO, and has been replaced by Parag Agrawal, Twitter's chief technology officer.
Dorsey tweeted that Agrawal, 37, was unanimously appointed to the position by Twitter's board. "He's been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs," Dorsey said. "Parag has been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around. He's curious, probing, rational, creative, demanding, self-aware, and humble. He leads with heart and soul, and is someone I learn from daily. My trust in him as our CEO is bone deep."
Agrawal has been with Twitter for 10 years, starting as an engineer. His tenure began on Monday, and Dorsey said he will stay on Twitter's board through May to help Agrawal through the transition. Dorsey didn't go into detail regarding why he decided to step down, only saying "this was my decision and I own it." He added that he loves all of Twitter's employees, and his "one wish is for Twitter Inc. to be the most transparent company in the world."

Twitter executive Parag Agrawal became the CEO of the social media company Monday, after company co-founder and longtime leader Jack Dorsey announced he was stepping down.
In a letter posted on Twitter, Dorsey announced that Agrawal would become the new CEO of the company and said that his trust in Agrawal as the new chief is “bone deep.”
“He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs. ... He leads with heart and soul, and is someone I learn from daily,” Dorsey wrote in the letter.
In a letter responding to Dorsey’s announcement, Agrawal said he was “honored” and “humbled” to become the new chief.
“Deep gratitude for @jack and our entire team, and so much excitement for the future,” Agrawal tweeted.
Here are five things to know about Agrawal, Twitter’s new chief:
1. He has worked at Twitter for more than a decade.
Agrawal started working for Twitter as the company’s first “distinguished” software engineer in 2011 and became the company’s chief technology officer in October 2017.
Before joining Twitter, Agrawal held research positions at AT&T, Yahoo and Microsoft, according to his LinkedIn page.
2. He was Twitter’s chief technology officer.
As the company’s chief technology officer, Agrawal was responsible for Twitter’s technical strategy and led efforts to implement artificial intelligence and machine learning across the company.
3. He’s an alumni of Stanford University and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
He has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford.
4. He led Twitter’s Bluesky decentralized social network project.
Agrawal was previously in charge of finding a lead for the company’s Bluesky team. In 2019, Dorsey announced Twitter was hiring a team of software architects, engineers and designers “to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media.” The project is still being developed.
5. He’s not a prolific tweeter.
According to his Twitter feed, Agrawal doesn’t tweet or retweet much, and when he does, it’s mostly about deeply technical subjects tied to his former work as CTO.
