After a long offseason to ponder their choice, they selected Georgia guard Anthony Edwards. Memphis big man James Wiseman went No. 2 to the Golden State Warriors, followed by polarizing prospect LaMelo Ball at No. 3 to the Charlotte Hornets. NBA team evaluators had plenty of last-minute decisions in a jampacked night – just days before NBA free agency begins. Here's a full run-down below.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">1. Minnesota Timberwolves: Anthony Edwards, Georgia   </h3>The Timberwolves went the safe route in selecting Edwards, an explosive scorer with two-way ability. The 6-foot-4, do-everything guard can mesh well with Minnesota All-Stars Karl-Anthony Towns and D'Angelo Russell. The team didn't need a franchise-changing star, and Edwards will have time to come into his own.  FIVE THINGS TO KNOW: Get to know Timberwolves' No. 1 pick Anthony Edwards The 7-footer can be a 20-and-10 big man. He'll be an ideal fit on a guard-savvy Warriors roster looking to rebound in 2020-21. Wiseman provided just a small sample of his ability in a short college career, as he left Memphis early in the season halfway through an NCAA suspension. But there's All-Star potential right away.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">3. Charlotte Hornets: LaMelo Ball, Illawarra Hawks (Australia)</h3>The 6-7 point guard brings star power to Michael Jordan's franchise. He's one of the most intriguing players in recent draft memory based on his upside and polarizing background. Ball played only 12 games in Australia's National Basketball League, but it was enough to entice NBA scouts and rewrite the narrative his father had poorly written. He has a quick-trigger jumper that still needs accuracy, but his floor vision and court savvy make him elite.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">4. Chicago Bulls: Patrick Williams, Florida State</h3>The biggest surprise of the draft by far. New coach Billy Donovan will get a late bloomer in Williams, who didn’t start one game and didn’t average double figures for the Seminoles as a freshman. Yet the potential and key attributes are there as a 6-8 forward. Williams is quick, explosive, strong, and athletic. Developing a 3-point shot to complement his mid-range game would be a big boost. He’ll make an immediate impact in Chicago. <h3 style="text-align: left;">5. Cleveland Cavaliers: Isaac Okoro, Auburn</h3>The 6-6 wing is one of the best defensive players in the draft. He can get downhill and score through contact, with athleticism and a wingspan that could make him an X-Factor for the Cavs. His offense needs work, but he'll have time to develop in Cleveland.   <h3 style="text-align: left;">6. Atlanta Hawks: Onyeka Okongwu, USC</h3>Okongwu shows flashes of Bam Adebayo and at 6-9 could be the steal of this draft as a dynamic big. He averaged 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds for the Trojans in 2019-20, showing strength on the glass and low block. His production and rim protection will help an Atlanta team that struggled on defense last year.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">7. Detroit Pistons: Killian Hayes,  Ratiopharm Ulm (Germany)</h3>Hayes, an American-born lefty, is a dynamic playmaker from France who evolved during his pro season in the top league in Germany in 2019-20. His jump shot is questionable, but Detroit can hand him the keys as the point guard of the future. His long-term upside as a 6-5 crafty guard is huge. <h3 style="text-align: left;">8. New York Knicks: Obi Toppin, Dayton</h3>The Knicks got the player they were wanting all along, and he's a highlight-reel machine who can shine under the New York lights. USA TODAY Sports' national college basketball player of the year can do a mix of everything, including stepping out on the perimeter and mastering pick-and-rolls. At 22, Toppin is older than most of his counterparts, and his high motor and tenacious dunking translate to immediate production.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">9. Washington Wizards: Deni Avdija, Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel) </h3>Avdija fell from where he was projected, and an ailing Washington franchise will benefit. The overseas prospect with great size at 6-9 can play multiple positions, attacking the rim like a guard and showing the ability to defend big men in the post. He has a wide-ranging skill-set, displayed when he won the MVP of the FIBA under-20 European Championship. <h3 style="text-align: left;">10. Phoenix Suns: Jalen Smith, Maryland</h3>The 6-10 big man went higher than expected based on the Suns’ needs. He considered leaving after his freshman season, but returning gave him a chance to blossom in 2019-20. He rebounds, runs the court, blocks shots and can score. He has good hands and footwork and also does damage in the low post.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">11. San Antonio Spurs: Devin Vassell, Florida State</h3>The second Seminole selected on the night, Vassell was one of the most improved players in all of college basketball last year, spearheading Florida State to its first ACC regular-season title. Vassell will fit in nicely with San Antonio’s disciplined system, bringing length at 6-7 and potential to be a defensive stopper on the wing.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">12. Sacramento Kings: Tyrese Haliburton, Iowa State</h3>A play-making point guard who can defend well, Haliburton is an absolute steal in this draft. His numbers (15.2 points per game, 6.5 assists, 50% FG, 42% from 3-point range) in 2019-20 don't do him justice. Haliburton has a skill-set comparable to Ja Morant and Russell Westbrook in the NBA, but he’ll have to mesh with De’Aaron Fox in Sac Town. <h3 style="text-align: left;">13. New Orleans Pelicans: Kira Lewis Jr., Alabama</h3>The 6-3 guard led Alabama in scoring (18.5 per game) and assists (5.2 per game) and shot 45.9% from the field, 36.6% on 3s and 80.2% from the foul line. He has a great handle and uses it well, with speed to beat defenders off the dribble. Look for him to add backcourt depth alongside Lonzo Ball and Co. <h3 style="text-align: left;">14. Boston Celtics (from Memphis Grizzlies): Aaron Nesmith, Vanderbilt</h3>Nesmith is considered one of the best 3-point shooters in this draft, so he’ll be a solid fit in coach Brad Stevens’ core. His 2019-20 NCAA season, in which he averaged 23 points, was cut short after 14 games due to a right foot injury. <h3 style="text-align: left;">15. Orlando Magic: Cole Anthony, North Carolina</h3>The Tar Heels had an unexpectedly horrific campaign, and Anthony's knee injury played a major part. His lone NCAA season provided enough of a look at his tenacity and poise, reminiscent of a young Derrick Rose. He’ll be an instant sparkplug for a Magic franchise still trying to break through.   <h3 style="text-align: left;">16. Detroit Pistons (via trade with Rockets, Blazers): Isaiah Stewart,  Washington</h3>Stewart became a consistent big man with promising potential as a finisher and rim protector. That won’t translate right away in the NBA, but the ceiling is high. He averaged 16.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.2. blocks last season for the Huskies. <h3 style="text-align: left;">17. Oklahoma City Thunder (via trade with Timberwolves): Aleksej Pokusevski, Olympiacos (Greece)</h3>Pokusevski is intriguing as a 7-footer who can handle the ball, pass and drive to the rim. He’s just 18 and does not have a lot of top-level pro experience in Europe. He needs to work on his shot and get stronger so he can absorb contact. <h3 style="text-align: left;">18. Dallas Mavericks: Josh Green, Arizona</h3>Green, an Australia product who elevated his game in the states, established himself with his 3-point shot and ability to find his spots in half-court sets with the Wildcats. Green’s quickness and strength will be an asset on both offense and defence.   <h3 style="text-align: left;">19. Detroit Pistons (via trade with Nets, Clippers): Saddiq Bey, Villanova</h3>Bey was the Wildcats' best player after a breakout sophomore campaign, averaging 16.1 points and shooting 45% on 3-pointers. He'll be an ideal fit as a role player for new coach Steve Nash as a 6-7 wing with high basketball IQ.  20. Miami Heat: Precious Achiuwa, MemphisAchiuwa possesses the strength to thrive in the NBA at the power forward position at 6-9, giving him an edge on defence and rebounding. But he will need to develop on offense. He averaged 15.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks last year for the Tigers. Maxey (14 points per game) was the key piece on one of coach John Calipari’s most underrated Kentucky teams. His shot needs work, but he has gifts that can't be taught as a combo guard with a quick first step and knack to make others better. <h3 style="text-align: left;">22. Denver Nuggets (from Houston Rockets): Zeke Nnaji, Arizona</h3>The Pac-12 freshman of the year brings a high motor and can do a lot near the rim at 6-11. He brings energy and can pack on double-doubles, but his biggest strength is that he doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">23. Minnesota Timberwolves (via trade from Knicks): Leandro Bolmaro, Barcelona (Spain)</h3>Part of Argentina’s next generation of talent, the 6-7 Bolmaro plays on the wing where he can handle the basketball as a playmaker both for himself and teammates. He also shows promise on the defensive end with agility and craftsmanship. <h3 style="text-align: left;">24. Denver Nuggets (via trade with Pelicans): R.J. Hampton, New Zealand Breakers (Australia)</h3>Hampton didn't benefit from his time in Australia's top pro league like LaMelo Ball did, and his game would have been better spotlighted in the NCAA. But his tools (length, quickness, agility) are there even if the intangibles (jumper, ball-handling, IQ) aren't mastered yet.  <h3 style="text-align: left;">25. New York Knicks (via trade with Timberwolves): Immanuel Quickley, Kentucky</h3>A surprise pick in the first round: Quickley plays with a chip on his shoulder and has a finesse game. He can shoot well from outside and run an offense. He was the SEC player of the year for the Wildcats.   <h3 style="text-align: left;">26. Boston Celtics: Payton Pritchard, Oregon</h3>The Pac-12 player of the year makes up for his lack of athleticism as a pesky defender and smart playmaker. Pritchard can settle in as a solid role player for a Boston team that’s known for utilizing high-IQ players. <h3 style="text-align: left;">27. Utah Jazz (from the Los Angeles Clippers via New York Knicks): Udoka Azubuike, Kansas</h3>The 7-footer was a key force for coach Bill Self at Kansas over the last four years. He’ll bring his size and ability in the paint to a Utah roster that could benefit from what the big man brings to the table. <h3 style="text-align: left;">28. Minnesota Timberwolves (via trade with Thunder): Jaden McDaniels, Washington</h3>McDaniels will be a fit in the modern NBA because of his defensive versatility at 6-9, but he needs to develop as a shooter. He has a strong network to help him adjust to the pros, including his cousin, Juwan Howard. <h3 style="text-align: left;">29. Toronto Raptors: Malachi Flynn,  San Diego State</h3>An ideal fit for a Toronto squad looking to bolster its backcourt. Flynn's size makes him a bit of a risk, but the All-America guard benefited greatly from the virtual combine process in reminding scouts of his abilities that helped the Aztecs stage a historic 2019-20 season. Flynn's underrated status could make him the Fred VanVleet of this draft class.  Bane is the type of end-of-first-round-calibre player who can be a role player off the bench as a strong 6-6 guard. It can be a lot to take in, whether or not you’re coming over from the PS5’s predecessor, the well-regarded PlayStation 4. Many of the parts are the same; they’re just in different places. You’ll learn the ropes in time. Here are a few pointers that’ll give you a headstart: The main <a href="https://jobklix.blogspot.com/2020/11/15-tips-to-make-most-of-your-new.html" target="_blank">dashboard</a> is broken up into two screens: Games and Media. Games are where your Games and related apps, like the Media Gallery (more on that in a bit), are. Media is where you’ll find your downloaded streaming services and the like.This time around, the PS button doesn’t take you back to the main dashboard. It pulls up something called a control center—a string of icons that each perform different console-level functions. To get to the main dashboard, hit the little icon that looks like a house.Your settings are all the way at the top. Just look for the icon, right next your PSN profile, that looks like a gear. Most of the cool stuff you can do with the console can be found in one of the many submenus buried within.Line up some PS4 game downloads.Thanks to the system’s souped-up tech, the PS5 can load PS4 games faster than the PS4 ever did. How much faster depends on the game—sometimes it’s a matter of seconds, sometimes whole minutes—but the verdict is clear: The PS5 is light-years faster. In other words, you may want to wrap up any straggling PS4 games on newer, shinier hardware. That’s not the only way to move PS4 games to a PS5. An external device with PS4 games loaded on it should work just fine with your PS5. Just plug it in and play. (For what it’s worth, I tested it with a standard-issue Western Digital Elements 1TB hard drive. The only hiccup was that I had to plug it into the PS5’s rear two USB ports, rather than the one on the console’s face.) Play Astro’s Playroom.One cool thing about the PS5 is the fact that you don’t even have to buy or download any games to start playing. Every console comes with a copy of Astro’s Playroom—a 3D platformer brimming with charm and neat references to PlayStation history—pre-installed on the solid-state drive (SSD). It’s a lovely little game with some genuinely challenging moments. Beyond that, it’s also a bona fide tech demo for some of the remarkable new things the DualSense controller can do, certainly more so than any of the other games available at launch. Since Astro’s comes pre-packaged with the system, it’s easy to sleep on. Don’t. Give it a whirl. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised. Longtime PlayStation fans, especially, will be thrilled by the stroll down memory lane. If you’re in dire need of the extra space , know that you can delete it. (Yes, even though Astro’s Playroom is a pre-installed file, you don’t have to keep it around.) On paper, the PlayStation 5 has a 825GB solid-state drive (SSD) for storage, but you can only use 667GB for your own purposes. Even though Astro’s Playroom is just 11GB, when you’re dealing with such a relatively small storage locker—when you’re playing games in an environment that regularly produces titles with triple-digit download sizes—every byte counts. And if you’re itching to hop back in, you can always redownload the game from the PlayStation Store. Unlike some of the game’s levels, deleting Astro’s Playroom is a cakewalk. First, head to your settings. Scroll down to the Storage menu. Click on “console storage,” then go to “games and apps.” Simply check off Astro’s Playroom and hit “delete.” And look at that: When you wrap up with other games in the future, you’ll now have no trouble figuring out how to delete them! Conserve energy.The <a href="https://jobklix.blogspot.com/2020/11/15-tips-to-make-most-of-your-new.html" target="_blank">PS5</a> has a few handy energy-preservation measures. Making the most of them is a win-win-win, however marginal, for the environment, your power bill, and your green footprint. First, head to your settings and open up the “System” menu. Scroll down to “Power Saving.” There, you’ll be able to designate how long your console will stay active (basically, the screen is on) during periods of inactivity (basically, when you go for long stretches without touching the controller). There are separate timers for games and for media playback, and they can be ticked up all the way to five hours, which is enough time to watch the first act of The Irishman. In the interest of preserving your triple win, though, you might want to set a lower timer. The Power Saving options will also let you set a time limit for your controller. And, while you’re at it, make sure to switch on both of the toggles in the “Features Available in Rest Mode” submenu. That’ll allow you to make the most of automatic downloads (which we’ll get to shortly). Customize your notifications. Look at all the stuff you can ignore! Screenshot: Sony / KotakuLike a smartphone, the PS5 will let you pick and choose who, or what, is allowed to bother you. Just head to the Notifications menu (near the bottom of your settings). You can turn off pop-up notifications entirely, or decide piecemeal from a wide range of system functions, including Trophies, friend requests, and messages. You can even further designate when these pings show up. Maybe you don’t want them to pop up during video playback but don’t mind them when you’re playing games. The choice is yours. Mess around with the DualSense’s settings.The DualSense controller is arguably the best case for the next generation. The triggers respond with purpose and weight, even going so far to tighten up when you swing between buildings in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Vibrations occur dynamically, signalling game events beyond just “you took damage” or “you ran into something.” It’s a huge step forward beyond the PS4’s DualShock 4, but if you’re not one for haptic advancements, you can tone it down. In your settings, head to your Accessories menu. Open up the “Controllers” submenu. There, you can adjust your gamepad’s vibration intensity. You can make it so controllers, including any DualShock 4s, don’t emit as much bright light—a boon for those who like to game in the dark. And your pets will thank you for this one: You can even turn the DualSense’s speaker volume down. Add accessibility options to the control center.Pull up the control center. (Remember? PS button.) Hit the Options button. That will allow you to add or remove functions—well, some of them. You can’t, for instance, remove your notifications or the power button. You can, however, get rid of the music player, in the event that you don’t care about Spotify recommending you listen to the “Top Gaming Tracks” or “Genre Glitch” playlists. As far as cool stuff to add from the minute you get your hands on the console, try these two: Accessibility. Slating this into your control center allows you to switch up the PS5’s text size and weight on the fly. Beyond that, you can toggle on a whole host of color correction options, and even turn on a high-contrast mode—essential options for those with vision issues. The function also gives you a quick shortcut to the system’s full suite of accessibility settings. Network. You can’t do much with this one, but it’ll tell you whether or not you’re connected to the internet, how you’re connected (Wifi or cable), and what network you’re connected to. Having all that info on-hand at any given moment—as opposed to going to the home screen, going to your settings, going to the network menu, and on and on—is a godsend. Plus, this function adds a shortcut that will instantly take you to the system’s full network settings. Seeing as the PS5 can’t automatically pick up when you switch between LAN and Wifi, that, too, is a godsend. Well, maybe a demi-godsend. Having a PlayStation that can automatically pick up on different internet connections would be a godsend. Check out your playtime stats.I’m thrilled—beyond thrilled, really—to report that you can finally, after seven long years, view your playtime stats at your leisure. You don’t need to sign up for a weekly newsletter or wait for an annual report. You can just view that data directly on your system. One day, Bugsnax will hit triple digits, too. Screenshot: Sony / KotakuFirst, open up your profile (that’s the icon next to your settings). Then click on “Profile” and head to your Games tab. That’s it. A near-decade of data, all there at your fingertips. The clock isn’t to-the-minute—as it is with save files for some specific games, like Ghost of Tsushima—but it at least rounds to the hour. Figure out where your damn captures are.Sony did not make it easy to find your captures this time around. The main bar of icons on the Games tab will include the Media Gallery app—a program that houses all of your screenshots and recorded gameplay clips—but only if it’s among the most seven recent things you’ve opened. Otherwise, you’ll have to go hunting for it. There are three ways to go about that. From your games library: Tab over to the “Installed” menu. Scroll all the way down. It’s the icon with a camera. From the control center: In the event that you’ve recently snapped a photo, you should see it hovering above your control center. Click on it. You’ll see a shortcut that takes you directly to the Media Gallery. With the Share button: Hit the Share button. That’ll pull up an overlay over the bottom sixth of your screen. On the left, you’ll see a thumbnail of your most recent capture. Clicking on that will also pull up a shortcut to the Media Gallery. In our testing, we haven’t found a way to customize that main icon bar on the Games tab, either to expand its size or make it so the Media Gallery app sticks. If you find a way, please let me know. Screenshot: Insomniac / Kotaku Make the most of the Share button.The PS5’s Share button is a phenomenal resource for capturing screenshots and video, with a suite of features that are both streamlined and comprehensive. Let’s break it down, from left to right. You already know about the thumbnail. That allows you to share, edit, or delete your recent captures without having to go to the Media Gallery. You can cycle through the 15 newest.Next is a video capture function that allows you to save gameplay that just happened, even if you weren’t recording. You can preserve a massive chunk—up to 60 minutes—or you can save a short clip, which defaults to just the prior 15 or 30 seconds. When you have five minutes of gameplay or more, it’ll give you an option to save that, too. The value of this feature cannot be overstated. You’ll never have to say, “Man, did you see that?!” again. The middle icon snaps a screenshot.Directly to the right, you’ll see a conventional video capture button. Hit it once to start recording. Hit it again to stop.On the right side of the banner, you’ll see two icons. The inside one, the one that looks like a Far Cry radio tower, is an option for broadcasting. In the pre-release state, we haven’t tested it out, and thus can’t speak to its veracity or functionality.The furthest right icon, two lines that look like timpani mallets, allows you to tweak your recording settings. You can turn the high-dynamic range on or off. You can also mute your mic’s audio or, more blissfully, your party’s. Most crucially, you can flick the resolution from 4K (pretty, storage-intensive) to 1080p (still pretty, but less so, and not as much a burden on your SSD).Beyond the ostensible functions, the Share button has two shortcuts, both of which circumvent the overlay. Pressing and holding the button will snap a screenshot, while tapping it twice will save the prior 30 seconds of gameplay by default. You can by heading to your Captures and Broadcasts menu (in your settings), navigating to Captures, and clicking on “Shortcuts for Create Button.” You’ll find an option that will allow you to customize how long, or short, your most recent gameplay clips are. For a look at what captured gameplay looks like at 4K, check out the following video. Save for a few moments of publicly available trailer footage—which we’ve denoted—all of the footage was captured using the PS5’s internal video capture software set to 4K resolution. Automatically invert your Y-axis—and, sure, why not, your X-axis too.The PS5 boasts one of the coolest features from, of all places, the Xbox 360: an ability to automatically invert your Y-axis on a system level. Well, most of the time. In our testing, we’ve found that it works for a good number of PS5 games but is a nonstarter for backward-compatible PS4 games. Still, it’s a neat feature, and setting it up is a breeze. Open up your settings. Head to your “Saved Data and Game/App Settings” submenu, and scroll to “Game Presets.” You’ll see options for first-person and third-person games, and can fiddle with drop-down menus for the horizontal and vertical axes. Both perspectives have both menus, and all four offer the same options: game default, normal, and inverted. There are some other intriguing presets tucked away in there, including one that remembers your preferred difficulty level (from Easiest to Hardest) and applies it to your new games. There’s another one that can automatically turn subtitles on. As with the universal inversion, these only apply to games that support the respective features. Turn on automatic updates.Back out of the “Game Presets” settings and you’ll see, directly beneath it, an option that allows you to customize automatic updates. Make sure both options—Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode—are turned on. That will make sure your games are always up to date, so you won’t have to frantically install, say, the latest Division 2 patch just to party up with your friends. Switch between a game’s PS4 and PS5 versions.From Spider-Man: Miles Morales to Sackboy: A Big Adventure, many of the PS5’s launch titles are also coming out on PS4. This doesn’t pose a huge issue, but if you’re not careful, you might accidentally download the version of the game you don’t have installed. For instance, I have Spider-Man: Miles Morales saved to my PS5. When I look at the PS4 version, which isn’t saved to my PS5, this shows up: It’s subtle, but watch out for those indicators. What’s more, sometimes, the system seems to switch these icons to the alternate version without warning. A hurried eye could miss the arrow and the PS4 indicator and queue up another download, thinking, perhaps, that the PS5 version was by some quirk deleted. To switch to the version you want, hover over a game’s icon, hit the Options button, and select “game version.” That’ll pull up all the available copies associated with your account. Choose the one you want to play (presumably, the one you’ve already downloaded). Oh, and don’t accidentally download both versions of a game. That’s just wasting precious storage space. Heads up: Don’t unplug your PS5 while it’s turned on.It will beep at you, much like the PS4 would, and you’ll be faced with angry screens reminding you—shaming, even—why that was such a bad move. As if you didn’t know. Instead, learn how to turn the PS5 off properly.With the PS5, you could power things down by holding the controller’s PS button and navigating to the system’s power options. You can’t do that with the PS5. Instead, you have to pull up the control center and go allllllll the way to the power button on the right. You could also use the Kotaku-patented wrap-around trick. Pull up the control center, hover over the home icon, and flick the thumbstick left. Voila! You just saved 0.91 seconds of scrolling. That’ll add up over the years. Of course, you can always just turn off your PS5 the old-fashioned way: by hitting the console’s physical power button. PS4 owners will be comforted by familiarity; the power button, once again, is semi-hidden in plain sight. Here’s exactly where to find it: Obligatory 16th tip about having fun.Seriously. Have a blast. The PS5 is a tremendous machine, and is brand-new right down to the operating system. <h2 style="text-align: left;">On Computers: Toe to Toe with Alexa and Google </h2> A child asked me which was better: Alexa, the voice inside the Amazon Echo Dot, or Google Assistant, the voice inside the Google Home speaker, renamed “Google Nest.” Until recently, I would have said Google Assistant. That was before I read CNET’s “9 Things Alexa Can Do That Google Can’t.” Of course, right after that, I read “9 Things Google Can Do That Alexa Can’t.” Let’s start with some Alexa differences. Alexa can play Apple Music as one of many choices; Google makes Apple music off limits. Alexa listens for burglars, alerting you if she hears glass breaking, an alarm going off and other sounds. (But you must turn on “Guard” in “Settings.”) Also, Alexa can hear your whispers and whisper back.  OK, Google’s turn.  Google answers questions much better, even about Amazon products. I asked it about the new Amazon Halo, a Fitbit-type wearable. It answered perfectly. When I asked Alexa, she miffed it. Another thing I like about Google: It lets you play music, podcasts, audio books, video and other audio on another speaker or on your TV just by asking aloud. Now for some similarities: When I tried the free Alexa app on a new phone, it prompted me to set up an emergency contact. It will contact this person next time I say: “Alexa, call for help.” But both Alexa and Google can call friends and family by name, if they’re in your contact list. Fun Facebook Features ●     “Favorites” is a new Facebook feature. It puts the people you care about at the top of your newsfeed. To find it on your computer, click the down arrow in the upper right and choose “News Feed Preferences.” Then click “Favorites.” ●     “Watch” shows you videos based on what they think your tastes are. When I clicked it, I saw a guy play a typewriter in an orchestra performing the novelty tune “The Typewriter.” I also saw two guys performing “The Evolution of Piano.” But most of the videos on my list involved animal rescues. Obviously, Facebook has tagged me as a friend of the furry. You can find “Watch” on the left side of the Facebook home page. What to Do When Your Mac Freezes The first thing to do when your Mac freezes is to walk away for a minute or two.  It will make you feel better. It may even fix things: The problem could be a single program. By giving the system a rest, it gets a chance to catch up with you. Another thing you can do is press the “Command,”  “Option,” and “Escape” keys. This brings up an option called “Force Quit,” giving you a chance to shut off any resource hogs. During installation, the program asked me whether I would use it for 3D modeling, animation, illustration, comic design, web design or other professional-sounding activities. I answered all the questions wrong. I had never interviewed before, but for some reason I thought I was going to do great.  Right from the beginning it was bad. The first question they asked me: “How are you?” For which I gave my generic automatic answer Fine how are you. My interviewer also said fine and asked if I could tell him a little bit about myself. So, I proceeded to tell him that I was a PhD student.  I kept my answer rather succinct because I’d read how long-winded answers are a fast track to not getting hired. I learned that the opposite is also true. The 45 minute interview was over in 20 minutes and by the end I knew very little about who was interviewing me or whether or not the company was a good fit. To be honest, the interviewer probably didn’t know much about me either.  Communication is not about being short and succinct or long winded and drawn out; it’s about giving enough information to get your point across and engage with others. There was no connection between the interviewer and I.  Over the next few weeks, I practiced some of the most asked interview questions. By the next interview I felt a lot more confident. My answers were informative enough but to the point. I deflected the salary questions, inserted my own personality and bonded with the interviewer over our shared hobby, horseback riding. Who knew that would be my ticket in? I got a call back the following week for the second interview with the team, where we all shared a love for hiking. It felt less like an interview and more like meeting new friends.  The job offer was in my inbox a week later.  Interviewing In A RecessionYou’ve sent out the resumes, maybe even passed the phone screen, now it’s onto the interview. This can be the most stressful part of the job hiring process. Remember, you were picked amongst the hundreds of applications as a qualified candidate for this position. The job offer may be close, but there is still one last barrier; the interview.  How you answer these questions could mean the difference between getting your dream job offer and falling back into unemployment. As the pandemic moves forward, the global economy plunges deeper into the recession, increasing job competition and making interviews a little harder to get through.   However, preparing adequately and staying ahead of interview trends can put you ahead of the competition and help you secure that job without interview anxiety.  49% of hiring managers report that conversational skills heavily influence their decisions on candidates. So, it’s important to think of the interview like a conversation and showcase your ability to communicate effectively. 5 questions PhDs Are Likely To Get During An Industry Interview 1. How are you today? Can you tell me a little about yourself?These are the first two questions you will have to answer during the interview. In fact our polls show that 90% of PhDs reported being asked these questions. So how should you answer them?  First of all, you want to keep your answers positive. The recruiter or interviewer doesn’t want the first thing they hear from you to be about your problems. This sets a very negative tone for the rest of the interview. Instead, when asked how you are, simply say “perfect”. It is short, succinct, and conveys optimism and certainty, which is what they are looking for right now.  “Can you tell me a little bit about yourself” is always the second question. Most hiring managers have not poured the hours into your resume that you have. They are likely scanning your resume as you are introducing yourself. So, the best way to answer this question is with your elevator pitch. Don’t think they should already know because they have your resume or that you shouldn’t repeat things that are there. Instead, tell them who you are, what you want, and why they should care. Who you are goes beyond your technical skills and previous position. You can also add personal details. In fact, the person who is interviewing you may not have any technical skills, so adding that you like to go dancing or knitting will humanize you, show you have personality, and make you approachable.  What you want is always the job you are applying for, but make sure your why is not “because I need a job” or “because I need to pay my rent.” You want to show them that you have passion for this role beyond a paycheck. Maybe it’s because you want to work with a product that helps people with a certain disease or a company that is passionate about educating people on XYZ.  Studies show that an interviewer only needs 90 seconds to decide if they will recommend you to the hiring committee or not. This is true even if the interview lasts 45 minutes. In that time, you can only answer these two short questions. So, make sure you have confident and positive answers that embody your unique personality and the qualifications that make you an ideal candidate for this role.  2. Why should we not hire you?This can be a tough question to answer. They are asking you to give them a reason to move onto someone else. Don’t give them an answer. This is the new “what is your greatest weakness” question.  Don’t let them trick you into saying something bad or negative about yourself. Instead, take the higher ground. Tell them that the only reason you can think that they shouldn’t hire you is if they can’t live up to their brand/mission/purpose of the company. State some specific facts that you like about the company. This will show them that you know what they stand for and that you believe you fit within this mission. 3. How do you like to work?This is an important one as the trend of a decentralized workforce continues. More and more companies are switching to a hybrid or fully remote model. For these changes to work, companies need to know their employees can work autonomously. Furthermore, they need to know that employees can be productive with no or little oversight.  They are looking for not only how you like to work and whether that fits into the company culture but also how you prioritize your work and keep track of projects. Highlight some tactics you’ve used to make sure things don’t get lost or are done at the last minute. Maybe this is creating a daily to do list every morning over a cup of coffee, or an afternoon power walk to refocus your day. Also include how you communicate with others. Are you someone who will jump on a call with anyone at any time or do you like a little bit of warning. How do you inform your current boss/PI of your progress and how do you track that progress over time? These are the project management skills you’ve gained throughout your PhD career, but you need to show how these skills translate to an industry setting and the company’s goals.  4. Questions on salary.This is a common screening question and one that many PhDs get blind-sided by. Know that this question is coming and learn how to deflect it. You never want to answer this question with a number. If you aim too high this could automatically disqualify you as a candidate. If you aim too low, you will look like you are desperate to get a job and you don’t know your value.  There are two great ways to deflect this question. The first is to simply say “I will consider any reasonable offer.” This puts the questions back on their side. In addition, adding the “reasonable” implies you know what you are worth and you are not going to take a low salary. It shows you have an idea of what the salary expectations are.  The other way to deflect the salary question is to say that you are not concerned about salary right now. State that you are more interested in getting a better picture of the role and the team to assess your fit within the company. This will make you more attractive as a job candidate. You are turning the tables on them. You are showing that you are not concerned with money but rather with ensuring that your skills will allow the company to be productive.  5. Questions on why you want to leave academia.This question may have several answers. Maybe you are upset by the lack of funding for academia. Maybe you are sick of the poor support of the verbal beratement by your PI. These are all reasons why you may want to leave academia but are not the best ones to share with your potential future employer.  Instead, think of these questions more as why do you want to transition into industry? When we think of why we are moving towards our future instead of why we are leaving our past, it’s easier to frame things positively.  This is a great question to showcase some of your business acumen. Show them you have an understanding of industry and highlight the elements you are looking forward to. Maybe you are really excited about the prospect of working with people or being involved in the drug development process. Academia typically does not have these applications but industry does. So, frame your answer around the positive elements of industry, instead of the negative aspects of academia.  In ConclusionPracticing how to answer common interview questions can help you sound more confident and be able to ‘think on your feet’ during the actual interview.  These are just 5 of the most asked interview questions for PhD-level positions, but they all have some underlying themes. During the interview, you need to stay optimistic and passionate about the role and show how your past prepared you for this particular job. Never give them an excuse not to hire you and always show you know what the company aims to do and how you fit into their culture and team.
